Specic Capital and Vintage E¤ects on the Dynamics of Unemployment and Vacancies

چکیده
Shimer (2005) argues that, in a reasonably calibrated Mortensen and Pissarides matching model, shocks to average labor productivity can account for only a small portion of the uctuations in unemployment and vacancies. In this paper, I argue that, if vintage speci c shocks rather than aggregate productivity shocks are the driving force of uctuations, the model does a better job to account for the data. I add heterogeneity in jobs (matches) with respect to the time the job is created in the form of di¤erent embodied technology levels. I also introduce speci c capital which, once adapted for a match, has less value in another match. In the quantitative analysis, I show that shocks to di¤erent vintages of entrants are able to account for uctuations in unemployment and vacancies and that, in this environment, speci c capital is important to decrease the volatility in the destruction rate of existing matches. Vintage Capital as an Origin of Inequalities∗
Does capital-embodied technological change play an important role in shaping labor market inequalities? This paper addresses the question in a model with vintage capital and search/matching frictions where costly capital investment leads to large heterogeneity in productivity among vacancies in equilibrium. The paper first demonstrates analytically how both technology growth and institutional v...

Does capital-embodied technological change play an important role in shaping labor market outcomes? To address this question, we develop a model with vintage capital and search-matching frictions where irreversible investment in new vintages of capital creates heterogeneity in productivity among firms, matched as well as vacant. We demonstrate that capital-embodied technological change reduces ...
متن کاملModelling Capital in Matching Models: Implications for Unemployment Fluctuations
Analysis of the the standard labor-market matching model usually focuses on labor productivity as an important source business of cycles. A shortcoming of this model is that it cannot account for observed labor market fluctuations with aggregate labor productivity as the only shock in the economy. Yet analysis of this framework disregards another potentially important source of business cycle f...

The paper developes a uni...ed general equilibrium model that merges three basic building blocks of intertemporal macroeconomics: savings with overlapping generations, capital accumulation and search unemployment. Long-run analytical results for the small open economy show that the e¤ects of integration on unemployment depend on the nature of wage taxation and unemployment compensation. As a se...
